How to Take Care of a Lip Piercing. Lip piercings have become increasingly popular over the years. More and more people are getting into body modifications like your various lip piercings. What people may not know is that a typical lip piercing usually takes about 6 to 10 weeks to heal. If not properly taken care of, the lip piercing might develop prolonged swelling, redness, scabbing or bleeding. While all these occurrences are natural in the lip piercing healing process, it is important to take precaution to ensure it stays infection-free.
Here are tips on what to do during the lip piercing healing process:
Modify Your Diet
During the lip piercing healing time, you should keep close tabs on your health, especially with regard to your diet. It’s recommended that you eat soft and relatively cool foods like pudding, ice cream and yogurt. Avoid taking solid foods because they might bruise the fresh wound or become trapped in the piercing. If you have to eat solid foods, then make sure you chew them away from the piercing area.
Avoid Smoking and Drinking Alcohol
When the lip is healing from the piercing, you should avoid alcohol, tobacco and other drugs. Smoking cigarettes can irritate the lip ring while alcohol can dry out the piercing, making it susceptible to infections. You can wait till the piercing is completely healed before you go back to smoking or drinking. 6 to 10 weeks is not that long after all.
Avoid Coming Into Contact With Water
The effect of exposing your piercing to the shower or pool water might sound subtle but it may end up delaying the healing process. Chlorine water can cause the lip piercing to dry out, something that can lead to irritation. On the other hand, the shower water can be so harsh that it can aggravate the symptoms even more.
Keep the Piercing Area Dry
Be sure to dry the piercing area immediately when it comes in contact with foods, liquids and/or any other substance. You can use a dry, clean and disposable tissue to gently pat the area until it’s dry.
How to Clean a Lip Piercing
There are numerous ways through which you can keep your piercing clean and dry.
H2Ocean’s Piercing Aftercare Spray
We recommend H2Ocean’s Piercing Aftercare Spray which is used to clean piercings and other body modifications. It helps remove dried discharge and lymph secretions, which are experienced within the first 3 to 4 hours of piercing. It’s formulated with sea salt and lysozyme, which helps to significantly reduce the healing time and help bring down the adverse effects associated with a new piercing. That means your lip piercing will remain sterile throughout the healing period.
More Piercing Aftercare Tips
Always wash your hands with anti-bacterial soap before touching lip piercing or area around it. That will ensure it’s clean and disinfected, as germs and bacteria can be transferred to piercing from your hands. Dipping swab cotton in water and applying a small drop of antibacterial soap can also go a long way in making the piercing heal faster. Use a cotton swab to thoroughly clean the jewelry of any dried blood or crust around it as well. Remember, don’t remove the scabbing or crusting from the lip as that can cause bleeding. Just let them come off naturally. If you follow these aftercare tips you will be on the way to proudly showing off to the world!
