What You Need to Know About Your Tattoo Bleeding
Many people who get tattooed for the first time are worried when they start leaking blood and plasma for a while. It is important to know that leaking tattoos are very common and normal, not a cause for worry.
Due to the differences in people’s bodies, you may find that your tattoo is bleeding more than that of another person. It is possible that a tattoo on one part of the body bleeds less than a tattoo on another part of the body. Before you worry about a bleeding tattoo, let’s shed some light on a few pressing questions.
Do New Tattoos Bleed?
Yes, it’s normal to bleed for your art. Any person getting a tattoo might experience bleeding during a session. If your tattoo is bleeding one to three days after your session, that’s normal, too. You should experience a little less bleeding every day as your tattoo matures. If you do not experience reduced bleeding during the tattoo healing stage, you’ll want to contact a health care professional.
If you experience tattoo bleeding after years, it’s not due to the healing process but can be a sign of infection. An older tattoo might also bleed if you’ve developed an ink allergy or a skin condition like eczema rears its head. Contact a health care professional for help.
What is Weeping?
During those first three days after you’ve sat like a champ to get your forever art, a combination of blood, plasma and ink might ooze from your tattoo — this is called the weeping healing stage. A tattoo bleeding ink while healing is normal.
The very experienced tattoo artists will always ensure that as much ink as possible is packed in so that most of it remains. Even if excess ink is packed in your skin and some comes out with the bleeding, it is perfectly normal, and there is no need for you to worry. Big and intricate tattoos might leak more ink and take a little longer to heal.
Should You Keep Your Tattoo Wrapped If It’s Bleeding?
The answer is yes! Don’t panic if you notice your tattoo bandage filling up with blood, pus or other fluid. It’s best to leave an absorbent bandage on, such as a Tattoo Armour pad, for at least 6 hours after your session.
After 6-8 hours, remove the pad and wash the area with Nothing Foam Soap or Blue Green Foam Soap and water. Make sure your hands are clean before touching your fresh ink. Pat – don’t rub — the area with clean paper towels, then apply a small amount of Ocean Care Cream or Aquatat Healing Ointment.
Repeat the steps above until the Tattoo Armour pad comes off clean.
How to Care for a Weeping Tattoo
Here are three tips to care for a new tattoo.
1. Avoid Blood Thinning Substances
There are different medications that prevent or slow the process of blood clotting, which you should avoid. In this case, you should avoid drinking alcohol or taking painkillers and other blood thinners. This is because taking these after getting a tattoo interferes with the healing process of the tattoo. However, before you stop taking any prescribed medications that thin your blood, consult your doctor.
2. Avoid Exercise
Do not exercise immediately after getting a tattoo. Exercising can lead to excessive sweating, and some exercise regimens also stretch your skin, which can interrupt the healing process. Friction from rubbing against clothes and exercise equipment can also irritate a new tattoo. You should wait at least 48 hours before exercising.
3. Practice Good Aftercare
Keep your tattoo clean and free from infections. Ensure your tattoo is always kept clean and in an environment where it cannot be exposed to bacteria. It is specifically important to keep your tattoo clean in the initial healing stages of the tattoo.
